§01What to listen for

Rhode launched in June 2022 with three skincare products and a phrase — glazed donut skin — that did more work than any campaign. Listen for how deliberately small the range was kept, and for the lip-case phone accessory, which turned the customer's own hand into the advertising.

In 2025 e.l.f. Beauty agreed to buy Rhode for up to a billion dollars, which is the number that makes this a strategy episode rather than a celebrity one. A tight range meant every product was a hero product, drops kept demand ahead of supply, and the founder's face was the distribution. The open question is what happens to a brand built on one person's aesthetic once it belongs to a public company.
