§01What to listen for

Subdued is an Italian teen brand that has quietly built a following across Europe and, more recently, in American malls. Listen for the resemblance to Brandy Melville — the pastel palette, the ambassador-style social presence, the refusal to advertise — and for the differences, which are mostly about who gets to wear it.

The episode uses Subdued to ask a question the case library keeps returning to: when one brand invents a formula, does the second brand to use it win by copying or by correcting? Subdued's bet is on correcting. The tell is in the sizing rack.
